Wedowee is a town located in Randolph County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 818. The city is the county seat of Randolph County⁶.

Geography

Wedowee is located at 33°18'31" North, 85°29'8" West (33.308603, -85.485447)¹.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 818 people, 337 households, and 200 families residing in the town. The population density is 90.0/km² (233.4/mi²). There are 378 housing units at an average density of 41.6/km² (107.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 68.70% White, 30.20% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 337 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.4% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
