Upper Chichester Township, Pennsylvania

Upper Chichester Township is a township located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 16,842.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²). 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,842 people, 6,500 households, and 4,439 families residing in the township. The population density is 969.1/km² (2,508.2/mi²). There are 6,705 housing units at an average density of 385.8/km² (998.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 86.00% White, 10.36% African American, 0.18% Native American, 2.02% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,500 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the township the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.2 males.
