It starts as a psychological thriller, as IRA foot soldier Fergus (played by Stephen Rea) kidnaps Jody, a black British soldier (played by Forest Whitaker[?]). While Fergus guards Jody they develop some kind of bond. Jody is killed when he attempts to flee. Later, Fergus falls in love with Jody's girlfriend Dil (played by Jaye Davidson[?]). Since Fergus is convinced of being heterosexual it is quite confusing for him to find out that Dil is a transsexual (originally a man).
