Smiths is a town located in Lee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 21,756.

Geography

Smiths is located at 32°32'21" North, 85°5'55" West (32.539259, -85.098703)¹.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 186.2 km² (71.9 mi²). 184.3 km² (71.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 21,756 people, 7,806 households, and 6,252 families residing in the town. The population density is 118.0/km² (305.7/mi²). There are 8,437 housing units at an average density of 45.8/km² (118.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.79% White, 12.67% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 2.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,806 households out of which 44.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.9% are non-families. 16.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.
