POPCO

POPCO (Point of Presence Company) was one of the first Web development firms founded after the start of the commercial Internet. Begin in May 1994 by Glenn Fleishman and Todd Haedrich[?], the company hosted firms such as Atlas Model Railroad Company[?], Peachpit Press, and Faucet Outlet in its early days. Although the company never reached even 10 percent of the scale of the largest Web advertising agencies and development firms, it was profitable within 18 months and remains to this day. The company helped incubate Film.com[?], founded by Lucy Mohl[?], which was later sold to Real Networks. The company was sold to Scotty Carreiro[?] in late 1996, and put into a sort of maintenance mode by 2001. When POPCO was founded, there were only one or two other firms offering Web development services, including MecklerWeb, which was shuttered by the end of 1994.
