Piscataquis County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 17,235. Its county seat is Dover-Foxcroft[?]⁶.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 11,337 km² (4,377 mi²). 10,272 km² (3,966 mi²) of it is land and 1,065 km² (411 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.39% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,235 people, 7,278 households, and 4,854 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 13,783 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.84% White, 0.21% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,278 households out of which 28.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.10% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 27.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,250, and the median income for a family is $34,852. Males have a median income of $28,149 versus $20,241 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,374. 14.80% of the population and 11.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.80% are under the age of 18 and 13.90% are 65 or older.
