Phenix City, Alabama

Phenix City is a city located in Lee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 28,265. The city is the county seat of Russell County⁶.

Geography

Phenix City is located at 32°28'22" North, 85°1'12" West (32.472822, -85.020121)¹.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 64.1 km² (24.8 mi²). 63.7 km² (24.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 28,265 people, 11,517 households, and 7,566 families residing in the city. The population density is 443.6/km² (1,149.1/mi²). There are 13,250 housing units at an average density of 208.0/km² (538.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 52.94% White, 44.97% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,517 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.4% are married couples living together, 22.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.4 males.
