Pascha

Pascha (Greek Πασχα) is the highest holy day of the year in Eastern Christianity. It celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The name is derived from the Hebrew פסח, Pasach, meaning "Passover", the Jewish feast that ended just before Christ's resurrection. In Western Christianity, this day is known as Easter.

The Paschal Divine Liturgy generally takes place around midnight, the morning of Pascha. In general, the earlier a Divine Liturgy is celebrated, the more important the feast. Placing the Paschal Divine Liturgy at midnight guarantees that no Divine Liturgy will come earlier in the morning, ensuring its place as the preeminent "Feast of Feasts" in the liturgical year.
