Muhlenberg Township, Pennsylvania

Muhlenberg Township is a township located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 16,305.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 31.6 km² (12.2 mi²). 31.1 km² (12.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,305 people, 6,639 households, and 4,634 families residing in the township. The population density is 523.7/km² (1,357.0/mi²). There are 6,897 housing units at an average density of 221.5/km² (574.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.48% White, 1.21% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 3.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,639 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the township the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $44,627, and the median income for a family is $51,764. Males have a median income of $38,375 versus $26,375 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,624. 4.2% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line.
