Jorge Chávez International Airport

Jorge Chávez International Airport is Peru's main national and international gateway, serving over 4.5 million passengers per year. Located in Lima, Peru, the airport is named after the pioneer Peruvian[?] pilot Jorge Chávez[?]. It was the hub for Aeroperu[?] for many years, and now it serves as a hub for TACA Peru[?], Lan Peru[?] and Aerocontinente[?].

The airport was privatized on February 14, 2001 and is now managed and operated by Lima Airport Partners (LAP), a joint venture of Bechtel Corporation, Flughafen Frankfurt Main AG[?], Cosapi S.A.[?].

In the middle 1990's, tragedy touched the airport, when an Aeroperu[?] Boeing 757 that had left the airport crashed in the waters of the Pacific Ocean while heading to Buenos Aires. Rumors abounded that the crash was caused by sabotage because supposedly the Peruvian Mafia wanted one of the passengers (a prisoner who was being extradited to Argentina) dead. However, those rumors were never confirmed, and the only certain truth is that that Aeroperu flight was the only time a tragedy involving Jorge Chávez International Airport has happened.
