Jasper County, Georgia

Jasper County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 11,426. The county's county seat is Monticello, Georgia⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 968 km² (374 mi²). 959 km² (370 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,426 people, 4,175 households, and 3,122 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 4,806 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.95% White, 27.26% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 2.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,175 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 13.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.20% are non-families. 21.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.00 males.
