Hemphill is a city located in Sabine County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,106. It is the county seat of Sabine County⁶.

Geography

Hemphill is located at 31°20'33" North, 93°51'18" West (31.342612, -93.854909)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.66% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,106 people, 467 households, and 301 families residing in the city. The population density is 179.4/km² (465.3/mi²). There are 574 housing units at an average density of 93.1/km² (241.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.40% White, 16.82% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.62% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 5.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 467 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.96.
