Claiborne Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 16,851.

Geography

The parish has a total area of 1,988 km² (768 mi²). 1,955 km² (755 mi²) of it is land and 33 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.

As of 2000, there are 16,851 people, 6,270 households, and 4,338 families residing in the parish. The population density is 9/km² (22/mi²). There are 7,815 housing units at an average density of 4 persons/km² (10 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the parish is 51.80% White, 47.37% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,270 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.10% are married couples living together, 17.60% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 30.80% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
