Chatham, Virginia

Chatham is a town located in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,338. Chatham is home to Hargrave Military Academy[?] located at 200 Military Drive. It is the county seat of Pittsylvania County⁶.

Geography

Chatham is located at 36°49'32" North, 79°23'51" West (36.825530, -79.397379)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²). 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,338 people, 554 households, and 350 families residing in the town. The population density is 253.2/km² (654.6/mi²). There are 612 housing units at an average density of 115.8/km² (299.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 71.52% White, 26.08% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 554 households out of which 21.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 35.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.87.
