Chackbay is a town located in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,018.

Geography

Chackbay is located at 29°53'21" North, 90°45'7" West (29.889113, -90.752009)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 74.0 km² (28.6 mi²). 74.0 km² (28.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,018 people, 1,440 households, and 1,140 families residing in the town. The population density is 54.3/km² (140.7/mi²). There are 1,503 housing units at an average density of 20.3/km² (52.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.47% White, 3.98% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,440 households out of which 40.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% are non-families. 17.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
