Avenal is a city located in Kings County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,674.

Geography

Avenal is located at 36°1'30" North, 120°7'14" West (36.025086, -120.120605)¹.

As of the census of 2000, there are 14,674 people, 1,928 households, and 1,640 families residing in the city. The population density is 296.3/km² (767.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.84% White, 12.61% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 47.38% from other races, and 2.79% from two or more races. 65.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,928 households out of which 60.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.9% are non-families. 11.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.14 and the average family size is 4.30.
