Assumption Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 23,388. Assumption Parish is one of the 22 Acadiana Parishes. The major product of Assumption Parish is sugarcane.

Geography

The parish has a total area of 944 km² (365 mi²). 877 km² (339 mi²) of it is land and 67 km² (26 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.10% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 23,388 people, 8,239 households, and 6,311 families residing in the parish. The population density is 27/km² (69/mi²). There are 9,635 housing units at an average density of 11 persons/km² (28 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the parish is 67.17% White, 31.52% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,239 households out of which 37.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 14.90% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 23.40% are non-families. 20.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the parish the population is spread out with 28.50% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.90 males.
